Activities - On & Off the Farm

At Leaping Lamb Farm, guests are welcome to join-in and lend a hand around the farm, observe, or just sit back and relax! Read on for some ideas of things to do both on and off the farm. We want you to think of this as your place away from home. Leaping Lamb Farm is an enchanting retreat, far from a fast-paced world, a place you will treasure through photographs and memories long after you have left the Coast Range.

Activities on the Farm

Leaping Lamb Farm is a working farm, and some of our farm activities are seasonal and based on need. Here’s a list of ideas to get you started!

  • Feed chickens and other poultry

  • Collect eggs

  • Feed animals and let them out into the pastures or bring them in at night

  • Help clean the barn, fill water buckets, distribute hay, muck stalls

  • Bottle feed “bummer” lambs and kids (baby goats) when needed

  • Garden and pick produce

  • Relax on the deck or by the wood stove with a good book

  • Hike on our rain forest trails

  • Hunt for mushrooms

  • Pick berries

  • Cuddle the barn cats

  • Splash in the creek

  • Stargaze on clear nights… and more! What will you discover?

There’s plenty to do off the farm, too. Hike and bike surrounding trails. Fish* the Alsea River in season. Visit our local nurseries featuring flowers and organic herbs. Take a picnic to Alsea Falls or stop at the historic Hayden Covered Bridge. Hike to the top of Marys Peak. Tour the local fish hatcheries or area vineyards. Alsea boasts a general store and gas station, affectionately known as John Boy’s Mercantile, and country fare at Deb's Cafe.

In the area for a wedding or a weekend? Use our cottage as your base and invite friends back for a cocktail on the deck. You can even drive to the Oregon Coast, only 40 miles away, for a day of tide-pooling, crabbing*, clamming*, whale watching, or just walking on the beach. We have rentals in Waldport and Newport, if you’d like to combine a farm stay and a beach stay (we call this “surf & turf”!). Just get in touch with us to arrange.

Activities off the Farm

While nearly everyone who stays with us tends not to venture off the farm, there are some wonderful nearby activities. Here are some resources if you feel like planning an adventure.

It's best to call to make sure a place is open before you drive there.

Bus Tours and Shuttles

Plan a tour of Willamette Valley wineries, the Mid-Willamette Food Trail, covered bridges, the Columbia River Gorge, the Oregon coast, and more! Best Oregon Tours will pick you up right from the farm!

Live Like a Local

We are so fortunate to live in an area with an abundance of great food and people who craft products that we love. Here are some ideas for “living like a local” when you come to stay with us.

Again, it’s best to call for current hours.

  • Squared Roots Farm - right here on Honeygrove Rd., our neighbors Dana and Jeremy grow beautiful garlic! (That’s Dana’s garlic photo up there.) You can also pick up scapes (in season), garlic salt, or a garlic growers handbook to aid in your own gardening efforts.

  • Deb’s Cafe -We like to go to Deb’s and get a bowl of homemade clam chowder after a busy week! You can also get a nice breakfast here if you don’t feel like cooking while you’re visiting the farm, or pick up a pie for dessert. (Check hours before you go.)

  • John Boy’s Mercantile - Our local store with convenience items you may need, as well as a number of local products. A couple of our favorites are Alsea Acres Goat Cheese, honey from Honey Tree Apiaries, and meat from MH Farms.

  • Oregon Wine Country - the Willamette Valley is home to some excellent wineries and vineyards. Time your visit to the farm with one of their events and enjoy our cottage or farmhouse as a comfortable home-base!

Other Places to Stay in Alsea
